ABOUT Jason Houston

Read a recent interview with me by The Artful Mind magazine.

Wandering, sometimes aimlessly, along my career path, I studied biology and philosophy, ran a bike shop, worked as a rock climbing and kayaking guide, dabbled in corporate marketing and graphic design, and picture edited books and magazines—but I've always returned to photography.

In the 15+ years since I began working full time as a photographer, I have worked on a long list of editorial, commercial, and personal projects. My interests have always been in documentary photography and doing long-term, in-depth personal projects, and my editorial and art work usually derrives from these. Though I began by photographing adventure sports such as rock climbing, kayaking, and cycling, I now spend most of my time on social/environmental issues including food & agriculture, poverty, conservation, politics & protests, and the cultural landscape of suburban American life.

My first solo exhibition was in Santa Barbara, CA in 1996 and recently I have had my work on display in a number of venues including at a solo and group show at Spike Gallery in New York City, an exhibition for the School of Forestry at Yale University in New Haven, CT, and a documentary series of artists Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison at work for the DeCordova Museum in Lincoln, MA.

I am currently represented by Ferrin Gallery.

I am a professional member of the National Press Photographers Association and accredited with Canon Professional Services, I teach the occasional workshop, lead the occasional photography tour, and give the occasional lecture. I am a contributing photography editor at Berkshire Living, an award-winning regional magazine in western Massachusetts, and I moonlight as picture editor for Orion, a 25-year old non-profit, non-commercial, bimonthly magazine of nature, culture, and place. gallery & museum Exhibitions

I am an editorial documentary photographer. But, as is happening for a number of us, I have also had a few opportunities to exhibit my work. Click here to see a list of recent exhibitions.

While not my primary focus, I find it an effective outlet for some of my more experiemental projects, and having to think in terms of art series and shows also helps to evolve and refine the style and approach to all of my work. To view some current personal projects, please click here or to inquire about an exhibtion and available works, please contact me directly.
